Defect
The transfer case ring gear on four-wheel-drive vehicles received improper heat treatment during manufacturing, leaving some gears with insufficient strength. Repeated high-load operation, such as aggressive starts, may cause the gear to fracture. In the worst case, the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
For all vehicles, replace the transfer assembly with a conforming unit.
