What this is
jdmvin.com is a free chassis-number lookup service for Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) vehicles. Enter a Japanese chassis number and instantly receive its grade information, recall history, and an estimated production window — drawn directly from public Japanese government registries and manufacturer official databases.
Why we built it
Japan has the world's best-organized public registry for vehicle recalls and manufacturer grade data — but the information is scattered across nine different Japanese-only websites, designed for domestic users and certified workshops. For importers, dealers, auction buyers, JDM enthusiasts, and overseas owners, that knowledge has been effectively inaccessible.
jdmvin.com consolidates those nine sources into one English-first chassis-number search. No account, no payment, no friction.
Data sources
Every datapoint shown traces back to one of these primary sources:
| Source | Used for |
|---|---|
| MLIT Public Recall Registry (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) |
Every recall ever filed in Japan since 1993, across all 14 covered makes. Live retrieval from the official registry. |
| Toyota / Lexus / Honda / Nissan / Mazda / Subaru / Suzuki / Mitsubishi official grade databases | Factory grade, model name, and trim decoding for passenger cars. Queried live against your chassis number on every lookup. |
How chassis matching works
Your Japanese chassis number (typically a 4–6 character model code plus a 5–7 digit
serial, e.g. ZVW52-1234567) is matched in two ways:
- Grade lookup: the full chassis is sent live to the manufacturer's grade database, which returns the factory-recorded grade and model name.
- Recall matching: the chassis is compared against the recorded serial-number ranges of every recall filing for that model. Any recall whose range includes your serial number is shown.
Both lookups happen in real time on every search. Nothing is cached against your chassis.
Estimated production window
The Japanese chassis number does not directly encode the production year (unlike the 10th digit of a US VIN). However, by intersecting the production windows of every recall whose serial-range includes your chassis, we can usually narrow the build date down to within a few months. The estimate is always clearly labeled as "estimated" with the underlying recall windows linked for verification.
What we don't do
- We do not store your chassis number after the report is generated.
- We do not create profiles, track individuals, or sell search queries.
- We do not provide VIN-to-chassis conversion (jdmvin focuses on the original Japanese chassis ID).
- We do not provide ownership records, accident history, or odometer history (these are not in MLIT's public dataset).
