Defect

The airflow sensor has been evaluated with insufficient consideration of sulfide corrosion resistance. Sulfur gas emitted from the intake system rubber hose corrodes the sensor's internal resistor, which may cause a broken wire. This illuminates the EV system warning light, and fail-safe mode limits driving output. The engine may then fail to start. If the engine does not start, the battery cannot be recharged, and continued driving will deplete the remaining charge, rendering the vehicle inoperable.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the airflow sensor with a corrected part.
