Filing in context
The Parking brake is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 7 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 43 Mitsubishi notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 1,763 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 months.
Defect
In the rear wheel brake calipers, assembly variation in the parking brake actuator shaft causes the rust-preventive coating to peel. Water then intrudes through the seal and into the shaft, causing rust to develop. Continued use allows the rust to progress into the interior of the caliper, impeding shaft rotation and reducing parking brake force. In the worst case, a parked vehicle may begin to roll.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the brake calipers and replace any pre-correction caliper with a corrected part.
