Filing in context
The Computer (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Mitsubishi notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 1,149 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 5 months.
Defect
The engine control program, PHEV system control program, and spark plug specifications are incorrect. When the vehicle repeatedly operates in EV mode—driven solely by the motor with short engine run times—the spark plugs may foul. When the engine is subsequently required to start, fouled spark plugs prevent it from doing so, and the EV battery is not recharged. Continued EV-only operation then depletes the remaining battery charge, and the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control program and PHEV system control program to the corrected specifications, and replace the spark plugs with the corrected parts.
