Filing in context
The Automatic Transmission (A/T) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 19 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 56 Mitsubishi notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 1,951 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 5 months.
Defect
Improper machining of the transfer case oil seal bore allows the seal to be expelled from its seat. Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) migrates into the transfer case, causing ATF hydraulic pressure to drop. This produces shift malfunctions and illuminates the engine warning light and warning display. In the worst case, the vehicle becomes inoperable.
Corrective action
Inspect the transfer case on all vehicles and replace any affected unit with a conforming unit.
