Filing in context
The Computer (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 56 Mitsubishi notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 1,986 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 months.
Defect
The control programs in the engine control unit (engine ECU) and the PHEV system control unit (PHEV ECU), combined with an incorrect spark plug specification, may cause spark plug fouling when the engine is repeatedly started and stopped for short periods at low temperature. When fouling occurs, the EV system warning light illuminates and operation is restricted to EV driving within the remaining drive battery charge without engine recharging. If driving continues until the battery is depleted, the vehicle becomes inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine ECU and PHEV ECU control programs with the corrected software. Additionally, replace the spark plugs with the revised-specification parts.
