Filing in context
The Engine Assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 43 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 11 Mazda notifications from 2011 in this archive. For scale, 2,702 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.
Defect
Due to incorrect settings in the parts assembly equipment during engine production, the piston clip that retains the piston pin securing the piston to the connecting rod may be deformed. Continued use can cause the clip to dislodge, allowing the piston pin to back out and produce abnormal noise, followed by damage to the piston and connecting rod. In the worst case, the engine may sustain severe damage, oil may leak, and a vehicle fire may result.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the engine assembly with a conforming unit.
