Defect
Improper heat treatment of the valve springs used on the intake and exhaust valves of the engine caused fine cracks (hair cracks) to form during the manufacturing process. Continued use in this condition may cause the valve spring to fracture, resulting in rough engine operation and abnormal noise. In the worst case, the piston may be damaged and the engine may stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the valve springs with non-defective units.
