Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 3 manufacturers: Mazda, Nissan & Subaru.
The Engine Assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 43 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 Mazda notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 832 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 5 months.
Defect
On diesel engines, the timing chain tension guide—which adjusts tension in the camshaft drive chain—has insufficient strength. Chain resonance may cause the guide to break, producing abnormal noise. In the worst case, fragments of the broken guide become wedged in the sprocket, causing the engine to stall and preventing restart.
Corrective action
Replace the timing chain tension guide on all vehicles with the corrected/revised part.
