Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 3 manufacturers: Mazda, Nissan & Subaru.
The Engine Assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 43 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 32 Mazda notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 719 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 11 months.
Defect
The tensioner that adjusts tension in the engine camshaft-drive timing chain has insufficient durability, causing it to lose proper tracking. This allows the timing chain to contact surrounding components and produce abnormal noise. Continued use may cause the tension guide to break; fragments can become jammed in the timing chain, causing it to snap, stalling the engine and preventing restart. Alternatively, uneven camshaft rotation may over-tighten and damage the rear cam sprocket bolt, snapping the vacuum pump chain, disabling the brake booster, and reducing brake effectiveness. (Note: This notification supersedes recall notification No. 767, filed August 30, 2001, in which the corrective measures were determined to be insufficient. The measures have been revised and this notification is filed to implement the updated remedy.)
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the chain tensioner with a corrected part, and replace the tension guide and rear cam sprocket bolt with new parts.
