Filing in context
The Fuel Pump is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 57 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Toyota notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 396 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 4 months.
Defect
Adjacent coil wires in the internal motor of the electric fuel pump contact each other. Microscopic contaminants in the fuel, combined with motor vibration, wear through the coil wire insulation. Continued use causes the insulation to fail, resulting in a short circuit that disables the fuel pump. As a result, the engine stalls and cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the fuel pump with the corrected part.
