Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Lexus & Toyota.
The Fuel Pump is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 57 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 6 Lexus notifications from 2010 in this archive. For scale, 305 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 10 months.
Defect
The wiring for the fuel pump inside the fuel tank is made of a material that resists bending. When the fuel filler cap is opened, the resulting pressure change inside the tank can cause the pump mounting surface to deflect significantly, causing the connector terminals to slide against each other. Continued operation wears the connector terminals, and the heat generated during electrical conduction reduces terminal contact force, leading to a poor electrical connection. This may cause the fuel pump to stop, resulting in a no-start condition or an engine stall while driving.
Corrective action
Replace the affected wiring on all vehicles with a corrected part.
