Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Propeller shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 17 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 35 Mazda notifications from 2007 in this archive. For scale, 122 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years.
Defect
In four-wheel-drive freight vehicles, the rear propeller shaft bearing is made of an unsuitable material. During extended high-speed operation, lubricating oil temperature rises, accelerating a chemical reaction between the sulfur in the oil and the copper in the bearing, which generates large quantities of copper sulfide. The copper sulfide accumulates on the bearing, increasing sliding resistance and raising temperatures further. This causes the bearing to pull out of the transfer case, producing abnormal noise. In the worst case, the transfer case and output shaft sustain damage, the rear propeller shaft detaches, and the vehicle becomes inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the rear propeller shaft. Where no heat discoloration is found, replace the lubricating oil with the corrected part. Where heat discoloration is found, replace the transfer case with the corrected part and replace the rear propeller shaft with a new unit.
