Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 96 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 5 months.
Defect
The air conditioning fresh-air inlet is improperly designed, allowing rainwater to enter the blower fan motor. This causes the motor bearing to rust and seize, stopping the blower fan motor and disabling the defroster. On vehicles equipped with manual air conditioning, the thermal fuse in the resistance unit that controls blower fan motor speed is incorrectly specified and may fail to blow. In the worst case, the resistor may overheat and cause a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the fresh-air inlet cover and blower fan motor. If the cover is missing, install one. If the blower fan motor shows rust, replace it with a new unit. On vehicles equipped with manual air conditioning, also inspect the blower motor resistance unit and replace it with a corrected part if the corrected part is not already installed.
