Filing in context
The Shift Lever / Pedal is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 22 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 480 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 1 month.
Defect
The adjuster used to position the detent pin — which restricts movement of the automatic transmission select lever — is made of an inappropriate material. Thermal degradation causes the threaded portion to deform, allowing the lock nut that secures the adjuster to loosen. Continued use in this condition causes the detent pin to shift out of position. In the worst case, the transmission cannot be shifted from the R range to the P range, the ignition key cannot be removed, and the locking mechanism becomes inoperative.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the adjuster lock nut for loosening. If loosening is found, adjust the adjuster, tighten the lock nut to the specified torque, and install an anti-rotation spring on the lock nut. If no loosening is found, install the anti-rotation spring on the lock nut.
