Filing in context
The Suspension Arm / Rod is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 34 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Mitsubishi notifications from 2011 in this archive. For scale, 2,583 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 months.
Defect
During production of the rear suspension, inadequate control of the application area for the rocker primer — a stone chip protection coating applied to the lower body sides — allows the primer to adhere to the torsion axle mounting surface on the vehicle underbody. This contamination reduces the clamping force of the torsion axle fastening bolts. When driving on rough roads, the bolts may loosen. In the worst case, the bolts may come out entirely, reducing vehicle stability.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the torsion axle mounting surface on the underbody. If rocker primer adhesion is found, remove the primer and retorque the torsion axle fastening bolts to the specified value. Additionally, inspect the fastening bolts; if damage is found, replace the bolts with new ones and torque to the specified value.
