Filing in context
The Headlamp is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 80 Mitsubishi notifications from 2013 in this archive. For scale, 599 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 3 months.
Defect
The valve-retaining supporter spring, which forms part of the ground circuit for the low-beam headlamp, is improperly designed. Variation in connector assembly and age-related degradation from heat generated during lamp operation cause insufficient contact pressure. Vibration then produces sparking at the ground circuit contact point, generating localized heat. Continued use causes thermal deformation of the supporter spring and, in the worst case, the low-beam headlamp may fail to illuminate.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the valve retention section of the reflector. If damage is found, replace the complete headlamp assembly with a corrected part that incorporates an additional ground plate. If no damage is found, add a ground plate and terminal cover, and replace the connector and supporter spring. In addition, affix a revision label to the headlamp section of the owner's manual to reflect the addition of the ground plate.
