Filing in context
The Shift Lever / Pedal is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 22 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 2,111 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 5 months.
Defect
The bracket that secures the automatic transmission shift control cable to the transmission is improperly shaped. At high engine speeds, this bracket resonates, causing the cable guide pipe to rotate and wear the crimped inner surface of the outer housing. Continued use allows the guide pipe to pull free from the outer housing, causing the cable to go slack. In the worst case, the gear position remains in R while the shift lever indicates P, and the vehicle may roll rearward.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the bracket and shift control cable with corrected parts.
