Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 40 Isuzu notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,060 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 5 months.
Defect
The connectors used in the wiring between the battery, the power relay, and the turn signals are not waterproof. Road de-icing agents and similar substances can enter the connectors and corrode the terminals, increasing electrical resistance and reducing the voltage supplied to the power relay. When the turn signals are activated, the resulting voltage drop may cause the power relay to stop functioning and the engine to stall. Continued use can progress to a broken wire at the terminal, causing the power relay to fail permanently, stalling the engine and preventing restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, remove the affected wiring connectors, convert to direct wiring connections, and apply waterproofing treatment.
