Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Hino & Isuzu.
The Pressure control/transmission unit is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 14 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 29 Hino notifications from 2009 in this archive. For scale, 2,370 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 10 months.
Defect
On buses, improper cleaning of the brake lines allows contaminants to enter the brake fluid, causing brake fluid to leak from the brake booster (air master). Continued operation allows the contaminated fluid to degrade the rubber components in the hill start aid (HSA) system and the ABS modulator. In the worst case, the brakes may become impossible to release.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, confirm whether the air master has been previously replaced. On vehicles where no replacement has been performed, inspect the air master, HSA valve, and ABS modulator. On any unit showing brake fluid leakage, replace the affected parts with new components and flush the air lines.
