Filing in context
The Body is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 108 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 15 Honda notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 260 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 11 months.
Issue
The open stay attached to the flip-up tailgate was manufactured using an improper process, leaving residual cleaning fluid inside the damper case. This fluid causes the O-ring to swell, reducing damping force and allowing the tailgate to open faster than intended, creating a risk of contact with a person's body. The rapid opening can also cause the back door to oscillate up and down. Continued use under these conditions may damage the open stay mounting point and, in the worst case, cause the back door to drop.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the tailgate open stay with the corrected part and inspect the open stay body-side mounting point. If deformation or other damage is found, perform sheet metal repair or equivalent correction.
