Filing in context
The Ignition coil is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 9 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 Subaru notifications from 2021 in this archive. For scale, 361 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 5 months.
Defect
The engine control unit's control program improperly manages the shutdown sequence, causing the ignition coil to remain energized longer than specified. This excess current flow raises the ignition coil's internal temperature, leading to a short circuit and blown fuse. In the worst case, the engine may stall while the vehicle is in motion. Additionally, ignition coils that have already experienced prolonged energization may continue to fail even after the control program is updated, due to accumulated internal damage.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the ignition coil with a new part.
