Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Daihatsu & Toyota.
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 3 Daihatsu notifications from 2001 in this archive. For scale, 902 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 months.
Issue
In the engine, excessive timing belt tension causes the crankshaft to resonate, which may loosen the crankshaft pulley mounting bolts. In the worst case, the accessory-drive crankshaft pulley freewheels, disabling the alternator and the power steering hydraulic pump. This illuminates the charge warning light and increases steering effort.
Corrective action
1. Inspect the crankshaft pulley mounting bolts on all vehicles for loosening; on any vehicle where loosening is found, replace the crankshaft and crankshaft pulley with corrected parts. 2. Replace the timing belt on all vehicles and adjust belt tension to the specified value.
