Filing in context
The Engine assembly is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 23 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 28 Toyota notifications from 2022 in this archive. For scale, 187 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 10 months.
Defect
On hybrid vehicles, the cowl louver service hole cover has insufficient water-sealing performance. Sealing effectiveness degrades over time, and when the vehicle is exposed to heavy rainfall or similar conditions, water can enter the combustion chamber through the engine injector mounting area. This causes the connecting rod to deform and produces abnormal noise. In the worst case, the engine may sustain damage and the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add a drain guide to the service hole cover and add a seal rubber to the hood. Inspect the engine combustion chamber; if any abnormality is found, replace the engine with a new unit.
