Filing in context
The Parking brake is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 7 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,109 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with spring-type parking brakes, the roller at the tip of the wedge rod that expands the brake shoes has received improper heat treatment. This causes the roller to fail prematurely. In the worst case, the parking brake malfunctions and parking brake force is reduced.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the parking brake wedge rod as a complete assembly with a non-defective unit. Because full supply of replacement parts requires time, as an interim measure, inspect parking brake operation. Vehicles exhibiting malfunction are to be replaced immediately; vehicles with no malfunction are to be replaced at a later date.
