Defect
On steel disc wheels fitted to large trucks, an improperly designed rim-forming die produces a non-uniform mating surface between the rim and disc at the weld joint, resulting in insufficient fatigue strength at the weld. Extended use causes cracks to develop at the weld. In the worst case, the disc wheel may fracture.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, verify the manufacturing number of the disc wheel. If the wheel is identified as affected, replace it with a conforming part.
