Filing in context
The Computer (Fuel System) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 3 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 43 Mitsubishi notifications from 2020 in this archive. For scale, 698 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 1 month.
Defect
The engine ECU contains an improperly calibrated fuel pump control program. When the fuel level is low, the in-tank fuel pump may draw in air. As fuel travels to the engine, the ingested air is compressed and reaches high temperatures, generating carbon deposits that accumulate inside the fuel injectors, causing injector malfunction. In the worst case, the engine may stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles: (1) Reprogram the engine ECU to the corrected/updated software. (2) Verify the vehicle identification number and, on vehicles equipped with a pre-correction fuel injector, replace the fuel injector with a corrected/revised part. (3) Verify the vehicle identification number and, on vehicles whose owner's manual or maintenance guide includes periodic fuel injector cleaner addition instructions, discontinue that instruction.
