Filing in context
The Computer (Emissions/Noise) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 9 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 39 Mazda notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 212 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 5 months.
Defect
The fault detection program for the engine exhaust pressure sensor is incorrect, causing the system to fail to register a fault when moisture intrudes into the sensor and shifts its output value outside the specified range, resulting in exhaust emissions that do not meet regulatory standards. Continued operation in this condition allows the intruded moisture to corrode the sensor's internal electronic circuit, causing a broken wire. This triggers the engine warning light and activates fail-safe control, disabling the idling stop function and potentially causing increased shift shock.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the engine control computer and reprogram the exhaust pressure sensor control program to the corrected software. If the inspection reveals an abnormality in the exhaust pressure sensor, replace the sensor with a new current-production unit. Additionally, if the engine warning light illuminates after the software update, replace the exhaust pressure sensor with a new current-production unit.
