Filing in context
The Computer (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 39 Mazda notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 212 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 6 years and 5 months.
Defect
The control program for the engine intake shutter valve is incorrect, allowing soot and other deposits to accumulate around the valve and prevent accurate control of valve opening angle. When the engine warning light illuminates, the fail-safe function does not operate sufficiently, and the valve may fail to open fully. If soot buildup causes the valve to seize in the fully closed position, the engine may stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the engine control computer and reprogram the intake shutter valve control program to the corrected software. If the inspection reveals an abnormality in the intake shutter valve, replace the valve with a new unit. Additionally, if the engine warning light illuminates after the software update, replace the intake shutter valve with a new unit.
