Filing in context
This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mazda & Suzuki.
The Computer (Steering) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 10 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 39 Mazda notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 81 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years.
Defect
The fault-detection software in the electric power steering controller is incorrect. When battery voltage is low at engine start or at restart following an idling stop, the controller may falsely detect a fault. This causes a warning light to illuminate and disables the steering assist function, increasing steering effort.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the electric power steering controller with the corrected software, or replace the electric power steering controller with the corrected part.
