Defect

On light trucks and buses, the maintenance interval for the centrifugal filter in the blowby gas recirculation system is incorrectly specified. Frequent extended idling or neglected engine oil maintenance causes contaminants from the engine oil to accumulate in the filter, resulting in blockage. If the vehicle continues to be operated in this condition, rising crankcase pressure forces engine oil into the intake and exhaust systems, producing white smoke. In the worst case, unintended engine speed increases may occur, causing engine damage or a vehicle fire.

Corrective action

(1) On all vehicles, replace the centrifugal filter in the blowby gas recirculation system with a new part. Inspect the intake and exhaust systems and replace any damaged components. (2) Reprogram the engine control unit to add a warning lamp system that alerts the operator when the centrifugal filter requires regeneration, and distribute a supplementary owner's manual describing the corrective action required when the warning lamp illuminates. (3) Designate the centrifugal filter as a scheduled replacement part and distribute supplementary owner's manual and maintenance log editions reflecting this change.
