Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Parking lever/pedal as the affected component. This filing is one of 30 Toyota notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 826 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 9 years and 2 months.
Defect
On the manual parking brake lever, the retaining mechanism spring force is insufficient. When the lever is raised and the tips of the retaining gear teeth become balanced against each other, vibration or other external input may break that equilibrium and release the lever. As a result, parking brake force decreases and, in the worst case, the parked vehicle may begin to roll.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the parking brake lever with the corrected part.
