Filing in context
The Propeller Shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 52 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 46 Toyota notifications from 2023 in this archive. For scale, 4,133 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 months.
Defect
The propeller shaft universal joints on fire pump trucks were manufactured using components without grease grooves, preventing sufficient grease from being injected into the joint. Insufficient lubrication causes the universal joint to fracture. In the worst case, the propeller shaft may detach, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all affected vehicles, replace the complete propeller shaft assembly (both shafts) with corrected parts.
