Filing in context
The Exhaust Emission Reduction Device is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 21 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 38 Mitsubishi notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 855 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 5 months.
Defect
On diesel engine vehicles, the solenoid valve that controls the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler bypass valve uses an exterior resin material that was not properly selected for the operating environment. The large difference in thermal expansion between the resin and the internal coil wire subjects the coil wire to repeated excessive stress. Continued use may cause the coil wire to break, illuminating the engine warning light and stopping EGR control via the failsafe mode. In the worst case, nitrogen oxide emissions may increase.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the solenoid valve with a corrected part.
Affected models & chassis ranges
