Filing in context

The Exhaust Emission Reduction Device is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 21 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 34 Mitsubishi notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 987 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 3 months.

Defect

In the exhaust emission control system, the ventilation hole specification on the element cover of the heated O2 sensor is improper. Moisture contained in exhaust gas immediately after a cold start may adhere to the sensor element. The heater then rapidly heats the element, causing sudden thermal contraction and cracking the element. The resulting sensor malfunction may cause exhaust emission values to exceed regulatory limits.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the O2 sensor with a corrected part.
