Filing in context
The Lubrication System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 680 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 7 months.
Issue
In the oil filter for the diesel engine, the relief valve opening pressure is set incorrectly, which allows metal particles generated inside the engine to pass through the filter without being captured. When metal particles enter the vacuum pump and cause shaft wear, the pump's negative pressure generation capacity decreases. If the brake pedal is depressed multiple times in rapid succession at low engine speeds, brake assist force may temporarily diminish. When metal particles enter the turbocharger and cause shaft wear, loss of acceleration and abnormal noise may occur.
Corrective action
(1) On all vehicles, flush the engine oil, replace the oil filter with a corrected part, and affix a caution label to the engine hood stating that non-genuine oil filters must not be used. (2) To suppress the generation of metal particles inside the engine, reprogram the engine control computer on any vehicle that does not already contain the combustion improvement program. (3) Inspect the vacuum pump on all vehicles; replace the vacuum pump with a new unit on any vehicle showing reduced negative pressure generation capacity. Vehicles with only minor reduction in capacity will be scheduled for replacement once parts become available. (4) Inspect the turbocharger on all vehicles; replace the turbocharger with a new unit on any vehicle exhibiting poor acceleration, abnormal noise from the turbocharger, or other anomalies.
Affected models & chassis ranges
This filing lists 4 type code(s). A vehicle is affected if its chassis number falls within one of the ranges below.
