Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Steering (other) as the affected component. This filing is one of 26 Toyota notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 325 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 5 months.
Defect
The mounting bracket that secures the steering column to the instrument panel underside has insufficient strength. Repeatedly turning the steering wheel forcefully to full lock can cause the bracket to crack. Continued use allows the crack to propagate and, in the worst case, the steering column may no longer be held securely in place.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the bracket. (1) If no damage is found, install an additional corrected bracket. (2) If damage is found, replace the body component (instrument panel reinforcement) with a corrected part.
