Filing in context
The Other (Electrical Equipment) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 34 Toyota notifications from 2015 in this archive. For scale, 63 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 5 months.
Defect
The power window switch on the driver's door was manufactured with an improper grease application method for switch lubrication, resulting in insufficient grease on some units. Wear debris generated at the sliding terminals, combined with moisture intrusion, forms a short circuit. The terminals overheat, scorching the switch and surrounding plastic components. In the worst case, a vehicle fire may result.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the continuity resistance between the switch terminals. Units showing abnormalities are replaced with corrected parts. Units found normal receive an appropriate application of heat-resistant grease to the contact surfaces. If a unit that received the heat-resistant grease application subsequently develops an operational malfunction, the power window switch is replaced.
