The Engine (General) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 48 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 56 Mitsubishi notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 2,553 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 1 month.
Defect
On large buses, the idler pulley assembly was improperly assembled—specifically, the bearing press-fit and related operations were not performed correctly—resulting in excessive rotational resistance in affected pulleys. Continued use causes the bearing to develop abnormal noise and seizure. In the worst case, the pulley belt breaks and the engine overheats.
Corrective action
Inspect all vehicles for idler pulley play and rotational resistance. On any pulley where resistance exceeds the specified value, replace the bearing with a new one. If rotational resistance still exceeds the specified value after bearing replacement, replace the complete pulley bracket assembly with a new unit.
