Defect

On heavy-duty trucks and buses, the engine oil change interval is set too conservatively for severe operating conditions, causing the engine oil to degrade earlier than the specified interval. Continued operation with degraded oil allows sludge — combustion byproducts and oxidized oil deposits — to accumulate in the oil mist separator, clogging it and raising crankcase internal pressure. This forces engine oil into the intake system. In the worst case, engine speed may rise unintentionally and engine damage may occur.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, measure crankcase internal pressure. Where the oil mist separator is determined to be clogged, replace it with a new unit and replace the engine oil and oil filter. Where severe operating conditions are identified, replace the engine oil and oil filter regardless of separator condition. Additionally, reprogram the engine control unit with a corrected software program that improves low-oil-level detection and prevents engine over-speed. Apply a sticker to the vehicle to promote proper engine oil maintenance, and distribute a leaflet specifying severe-condition service criteria.
