Defect

During assembly of the stop lamp switch, technicians wearing work gloves contaminated with insulating lubricant allowed trace amounts of lubricant to enter the switch contacts. This causes an insulating deposit to form at the contacts, increasing electrical resistance and producing a continuity fault. As a result, the stop lamp may fail to illuminate. On most vehicle variants, failure of the stop lamp also causes the shift lever to become immovable from the Park position.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the stop lamp switch with a new part.
