Filing in context
The Other (Electrical Equipment) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 49 Mitsubishi notifications from 2008 in this archive. For scale, 744 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 10 months.
Defect
During assembly of the stop lamp switch, technicians wearing work gloves contaminated with insulating lubricant allowed trace amounts of lubricant to enter the switch contacts. This causes an insulating deposit to form at the contacts, increasing electrical resistance and producing a continuity fault. As a result, the stop lamp may fail to illuminate. On most vehicle variants, failure of the stop lamp also causes the shift lever to become immovable from the Park position.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the stop lamp switch with a new part.
