Filing in context
The Engine is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 72 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 50 Mitsubishi notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 564 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 9 months.
Defect
On the engine accessory drive belt auto-tensioner, the mounting flange geometry was improperly designed. As the tensioner bearing wears over time and sliding resistance increases, repeated high-load operation may cause a crack to develop in the flange. Continued use may cause the flange to fracture, allowing the accessory drive belt to disengage. In the worst case, this illuminates a warning light, increases steering effort, and may lead to battery discharge or engine overheating.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the accessory drive belt auto-tensioner and, if a pre-corrected unit is found, replace it together with its mounting bolt with a corrected/revised part.
