Filing in context
The Other (Electrical Equipment) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 56 Mitsubishi notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 1,736 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 10 months.
Defect
During assembly of the brake light switch, technicians wearing work gloves contaminated with insulating lubricant oil allowed trace amounts of lubricant to enter the switch contact area. This contamination causes an insulating deposit to form on the contacts, increasing electrical resistance and resulting in poor continuity. As a result, the brake lights may fail to illuminate. On some vehicle models, a failed brake light circuit may also prevent the shift lever from moving out of the Park position.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the brake light switch with a new unit.
