Filing in context
The Other (Drivetrain) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 4 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 49 Mitsubishi notifications from 2008 in this archive. For scale, 2,205 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 months.
Defect
In the dual-clutch automatic transmission, shifting the lever to the R range (reverse position) may fail to engage the reverse gear. Because the shift position indicator still displays R, the driver has no way to detect the condition. On a forward-downhill slope, the vehicle may roll forward. Additionally, if the reverse gear engages automatically while the driver continues to press the accelerator pedal, the vehicle may suddenly move rearward.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the electronic control unit software is updated so that when reverse gear is not engaged, the shift position indicator changes from steady illumination to flashing and the reverse warning buzzer sounds at a shorter interval than normal, alerting the driver. Users are also notified of the condition through a caution advisory, and the owner's manual is revised accordingly.
