Filing in context
The Wiper is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 14 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 15 Honda notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 533 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 10 months.
Defect
An improper electrical circuit design in the rear wiper motor allows back-EMF (induced electromotive force) to be generated when the rear wiper is operated with the wiper blade frozen, damaging and short-circuiting the capacitor in the circuit. Continued use may cause the capacitor to ignite and, in the worst case, the fire can spread to plastic components on the tailgate.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the rear wiper motor is inspected for normal operation. On units that operate normally, a harness containing a back-EMF suppression element is added to the rear wiper motor's electrical circuit. On units that do not operate normally, the rear wiper motor is replaced with a corrected/revised part.
