Filing in context
The Shift lever / pedal is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 25 Mazda notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 643 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with a column-type automatic transmission, the clamping structure between the plastic base plate and guide plate inside the shift lever is inadequate. Prolonged outdoor parking in direct sunlight reduces the clamping force at the fastening point, and repeated shift operations can loosen the fastening screws, producing abnormal noise and a catching sensation. Continued use may cause the screws to fall out and the guide plate to detach. This disables the key interlock system linked to the shift mechanism, preventing the ignition key from being removed and rendering the steering lock inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the fastening screws with new screws coated with a thread-locking compound.
