Defect
The control software managing the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) automatic regeneration function is improperly programmed, preventing adequate removal of accumulated PM (particulate matter) from the DPF. As a result, the automatic regeneration cycle may activate while PM has accumulated to an excessive level. This causes abnormal temperature rise within the DPF, damaging the exhaust temperature sensor and illuminating the engine warning light. In the worst case, the DPF may be damaged and PM emissions may exceed the specified regulatory limit. (Note: This notification supersedes recall notification No. 1051 dated March 18, 2004, in which the corrective measures were determined to be insufficient. The remedy has been reviewed and revised accordingly.)
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the DPF and exhaust temperature sensor and replace any damaged components with new parts. Replace the control unit with a corrected part. Because this remedy may cause fuel to dilute engine oil depending on operating conditions, replace the oil level gauge with a corrected part capable of detecting oil dilution. Affix a caution label to the sun visor describing the engine oil level inspection procedure, and replace the engine oil, adjusting the quantity to the specified level. Additionally, replace the existing DPF warning lamp caution label with a corrected label describing the required response when the DPF lamp flashes, and replace the owner's manual with a revised version that includes this response procedure and updated periodic inspection instructions.
