Defect
On four-wheel-drive vehicles, the gear ratio of the front axle differential is incorrectly specified. Depending on rear tire wear and load conditions, operating in four-wheel drive generates torsional torque in the drivetrain proportional to the rotational speed difference between the front and rear tires. As a result, even when the driver switches from four-wheel drive to two-wheel drive, the system may fail to disengage. Continued high-speed operation under these conditions causes the front axle differential to overheat abnormally, damaging the oil seal and causing an oil leak. The resulting oil loss leads to bearing and gear seizure and, in the worst case, front wheel lockup and loss of vehicle mobility.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the front axle differential with a corrected part and replace the four-wheel-drive control unit with a revised unit that adds a four-wheel-drive non-disengagement warning function and an oil temperature warning function. Because delivery of the corrected parts will take time, as an interim measure, inspect four-wheel-drive operation and front axle differential oil level on all vehicles; any vehicle found to be abnormal must have the front axle differential replaced with a new unit. Until the corrected parts are installed, owners must be advised not to use four-wheel drive. A resulting caution label describing precautions for situations requiring four-wheel-drive use—such as emergency escape—must be affixed to the sun visor, and its contents communicated to owners.

状況
②四輪駆動車の動力伝達装置において、前軸差動装置のギヤ比の設定が不適切なため、後 輪タイヤの摩耗状態や積載条件によっては、四輪駆動で走行すると、前後輪のタイヤ回転 数差に比例して動力伝達装置にねじりトルクが発生し、四輪駆動から二輪駆動への切り換 え操作をしているにもかかわらず、二輪駆動になっていないことがある。そのため、高速 走行を行うと、前軸差動装置が異常に発熱し、オイルシールが損傷してオイルが漏れ、ベ アリングやギヤが焼付き、最悪の場合、前輪がロックして走行不能に至るおそれがある。
改善措置
②全車両、前軸差動装置を対策品と交換すると共に、四輪駆動未解除警告機能や油温警告 機能を追加した四輪駆動コントロールユニットに交換する。なお、対策品の供給に時間を 要することから、当面の暫定措置として四輪駆動の作動及び前軸差動装置のオイル量を点 検し、異常が認められるものは、前軸差動装置を新品に交換すると共に、対策品に交換す るまでの間、四輪駆動を使用しないよう周知する。なお、緊急脱出等で四輪駆動を使用す る場合の注意事項を記載したコーションラベルをサンバイザーに貼付け、その内容を周知 する。
