Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,201 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.
Defect
The electrical wiring for the automatic transmission in the engine compartment was improperly assembled, leaving insufficient clearance between the wiring and the end of the thermostat fitting. Vibration during driving may damage the wiring insulation. Continued use in this condition may cause the wiring to short circuit, locking the automatic transmission in 3rd gear, or causing the speedometer to read incorrectly.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, chamfer the end of the thermostat fitting and inspect the automatic transmission electrical wiring. On any wiring found without a protective tube, install one. If the wiring is damaged, repair it where possible; replace it with a new part where repair is not possible.
